Fabrics
Our fabric used is called 'Ankara' fabric, this African print fabric is 100% cotton cloth. This printed fabric are made through an wax-resist dyeing technique called batik which first originated in Indonesia. These prints are hand-crafted by this process and therefore, differences between each item is common but this is what makes our pieces unique rather than representing a fault. These prints are a staple of the West African fashion and textile sector. It’s very important to recognise and understand where these prints come from as they often reveal a hertiage/historical story. Various prints are also used for non-verbal communication purposes between Ghanians.
We focus on efficient garment design and pattern cutting techniques, aiming to use 90-100% of the fabric when cutting. We ensure to use every off-cut, whether it's a hair-piece, additional fabric to patch work or a smaller item. Our textiles are hand picked especially for from the local fabrics market in Accra. At the markets there is many small shops often run by women, selling the most beautiful and colourful fabric. It can be hard to locate large quantities of the exact same fabric, therfore most of our clothing is limited edition for this reason.
Every single stitch, every little detail and every thought is complely hand-crafted and we love how unique this makes our products. The ethos behind Akoma Mór is not only to produce quality 'Made in Ghana' garments for the international market, but also to ultimately prove that garment production can successfully have social and environmental responsibilities at its core. Talk about fashion with meaning!
