Our Story

Akoma Mór is founded by Hayley Murphy in 2023 with the vision to introduce African Anakara prints to her own society and culture with the conception that Akoma Mór has the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Akoma means 'heart' in Twi and Ga (Ghanian Languages) and 'Mór' means 'Big' As Gaeilge (Irish Language). So 'Akoma Mór' translates to 'A Big Heart' joining both heritages. Akoma Mór is a business with an ambition. We are proudly Ghanian made. Akoma Mór garments style is designed in Ireland by Hayley and 100% hand-crafted in Ghana (West Africa) by our team of incredible tailors. You can ensure your goods are created in decent working conditions with fair pay.

Akoma Mór is symbolised by Empowerment, Joy & Purpose. We believe in the life-changing impact of economically empowering a culture of creative women with inspiring talents. We make a meaningful change within the Ghanian community by paying fair wages, creating employment, generating economic and creative opportunities. Therefore, Akoma Mór was created from the idea of using beautiful unique fashion as a means to contribute to addressing issues of poverty, unemployment and female empowerment in Ghana. We are a 'slow fashion' brand that homes on a 'zero waste' enviroment. This means we upcycle off-cut from our products and these left over pieces may be used for hair accessories and patchwork fabric. Therfore we adapt to social and ethical practices to try protect the environment as much as possible.

Social, Ethical and Sustainable Practices

Firstly, our textiles are made from natural fibers which is, 100% cotton and therfore, has zero stretch. Our brand follows a 'zero-waste' culture whereby, all left over pieces and scraps of fabric are upcycled to make hair accessories, bags and patchwork. There is no room for waste. This ensures that we are not adding to polluting landfills. We are a 'Slow Fashion' brand and therefore, every purchase is 100% handcrafted steeped in a culture of creativity and sustainability that gives back to the community.

We are an ethical brand that gives back with each and every purchase. 5% of every sale goes to Educational Development in Ghana. We dedicate this brand to more than just clothes, we want to give back to the community in as many ways as possible.

We source and hand-pick all our fabrics from local markets by local traders (often women) to help develop small-scale wholesellers and the African textile industry. Instead of producing here in Ireland, we pay fair wages to the local seamstresses in Kokrobite to help empower and grow their buisnesses and improve their livelihoods. Therefore, we support local production and materials. By paying fair wages, creating employment and making a meaningful difference in the Ghanian community, we hope to build an increased power to positively contribute to the society.
